Humes products on show at O Mahurangi Penlink

A new two-lane, seven-kilometre road and shared walking and cycle path being built by O Mahurangi Penlink Alliance between Whangaparāoa Road and SH1, will be a godsend for those living and working on the Whangaparāoa Peninsular.  This new road will provide network resilience, creating an alternate route to the Whangaparāoa Peninsular, getting people where they need to go more efficiently.

OMahurangi Penlink is being delivered by an Alliance made up of. HEB, Fulton Hogan, Aurecon, Tonkin + Taylor, and  NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) as the delivery agent.

Considerable earth works have been underway for some time to get the necessary stormwater drainage systems and other components in the ground so the two-lane highway and cycle and walkways can be built above it.

The Humes team have been asked to supply a full range of products – everything from concrete pipe in all sizes, manholes, wing walls … and even specialised pipe to accommodate fish.

“The first pipes went in the ground in early December and things went very well,” said Josh Broederlow from Pipeline & Infrastructure North, one of the many sub-contractors to the project.

“It was good to see our 2300mm diameter flush joint concrete pipe go in the ground at zone three site at Whangaparāoa,” says James Patterson, Auckland Regional Sales Manager for Humes.

“Throughout this year we have been supplying a variety of products to this project including concrete culvert pipes, manholes and a wide range of bespoke, complex concrete structures, which our design team have been working in collaboration with the project design team on to ensure we get them right.”

Another key component for the project is the varying diameters of concrete manholes ranging in size from 1050mm to 3000mm.

Other specialised Humes products required for O Mahurangi Penlink are the three-piece wing walls for the 2100mm pipelines, large box chambers with inlet and outlet structures, exposed aggregate pipe to create easy passage for fish in a nearby stream, as well as various pipe offtakes and concrete bends.

“There’s a long way to go on this project and we’ll be there supporting the O Mahurangi Penlink design team and the various contractors with help and product to keep this project on track,” says James.
