A new hybrid radial press machine at our Papakura plant not only increases productivity and reduces delivery time but is capable of manufacturing one piece manhole risers.
Sunny Gill, Plant Manager at Papakura and Brian Robinson, Continuous Improvement Manager have been leading the project to customise the Radial Press.
“While the machine is predominantly a pipe making machine, of which there are hundreds out there, we don’t know of any such machine that can also produce the monocytic manhole riser,” explains Sunny.
“It has been a tremendous amount of effort from the manufacturing and operations teams as we’ve researched, developed, tested and problem solved.”
Traditionally, a manhole is a two-piece product comprising of a manhole and base which requires a three-step process to produce. The new machine allows us to manufacture the manhole in one continuous piece. It is quick to produce, thanks to the concrete mix used which allows us to strip the mould immediately and deliver it to site within seven days.
“The machine itself is so much faster than what we’ve had in the past, it gives us real productivity gains, if we want to build a lot of stock we can,” says Sunny.
